How to Start Reselling SEO: A 6-Step Guide for Agencies

Adding SEO to an agency that does not currently sell it is mostly a commercial problem, not a technical one. The delivery is buyable. What you need is a way to sell, price, and support it without breaking what already works.

Step 1: Decide what you are actually selling

Do not sell “SEO”. Sell a specific outcome to a specific type of client. The narrower you start, the faster you get competent.

  • Start with your existing base. If you build websites for dentists, sell local SEO to dentists. You already understand the buyer.
  • Pick one service, not five. Local SEO is the best first product: fast visible results, procedural delivery, constant demand.
  • Define the outcome in their language. “More calls from people searching in your area”, not “improved SERP visibility”.

Step 2: Line up delivery before you sell

Vet and contract a provider first. Selling before you have delivery arranged means onboarding under time pressure, which is how agencies end up with whoever answers fastest.

Minimum before your first sale: a signed agreement with non-solicitation, sample unbranded report and audit you have inspected, a named strategist, and clarity on wholesale pricing across tiers.

Step 3: Price it

Product Wholesale Your price Margin
GBP optimisation (one-off) $100-$300 $400-$900 65-70%
Technical audit (one-off) $300-$1,200 $1,000-$3,500 65-70%
Local retainer $200-$500 $700-$1,500 60-70%
Growth retainer $700-$1,800 $2,000-$4,500 60-65%

Lead with the one-off products. They are easy to say yes to, they produce a visible result quickly, and they convert to retainers at a high rate. Selling a 12-month retainer cold to a client who has never bought SEO is a much harder first sale.

Step 4: Sell to your existing clients first

Your warm base is the entire advantage you have over a new SEO agency. They already trust you and you already know their business.

The opener that works: a free branded audit of their site. It is concrete, it costs you little, and it starts the conversation with problems rather than price. Book a 30-minute walkthrough, cover the three findings that matter commercially, and scope the fix on the call.

Step 5: Protect the relationship

  • Stay technically literate. You do not need to execute, but you must be able to explain what was done and why. A client asking “why did rankings drop?” needs an answer from you, not a forwarded email.
  • Write the client commentary yourself. Never let the provider write client-facing narrative.
  • Own every account. Analytics, Search Console, GBP – client-owned, you have delegated access, provider works through you.
  • Set expectations honestly. 90 days for technical progress, six months for ranking movement, twelve for clear ROI. Overpromising is the fastest way to lose a client you already had.

Step 6: Scale deliberately

Add clients in small batches and check quality each time. Providers rarely fail at client one; they fail at client fifteen when capacity tightens. Audit deliverables monthly, keep a second provider warm past ten accounts, and document your process well enough to migrate inside a month.

Frequently asked questions

How do I start reselling SEO?

Pick one service and one client type, contract a vetted provider before selling, price one-off products as entry points, sell to your existing base with a free branded audit, and keep strategy and client communication with you.

What should I sell first?

Local SEO, and lead with one-off products – a GBP optimisation or technical audit. Fast, visible, easy to approve, and they convert to retainers far more readily than a cold retainer pitch.

Do I need to know SEO to resell it?

You need enough literacy to explain and defend the work, not to execute it. If you cannot answer “why did rankings drop?” yourself, you will lose the client regardless of delivery quality.

How much can I make reselling SEO?

60-70% gross margin, 50-60% net after your own account management and sales cost. A ten-client local portfolio at $1,200 retail is roughly $6,000-$7,000 monthly net contribution.

What is the most common mistake?

Selling before delivery is arranged. It forces you to onboard whichever provider responds fastest rather than the one you vetted.
