How to Outsource Link Building Without Getting Burned

Link building is the highest-risk thing you can outsource. It is the only SEO activity where a provider can cause damage that takes six to twelve months and real money to undo. Outsource it, but contract it carefully.

The risk, stated plainly

Bad content is wasted money. Bad links are a liability. Purchased links, PBN placements, and directory blasts create a profile that requires disavowal and, in some cases, triggers manual action. Recovery is slow and the growth you lose during it does not come back.

Everything else in SEO is recoverable by doing better work. Links are the exception.

What legitimate acquisition costs

Method Cost per earned link Notes
Digital PR / data studies $300-$1,500 Highest quality, lumpy and unpredictable
Guest contribution outreach $150-$500 Analyst time, not payment for placement
Resource and link-reclamation outreach $100-$300 Best early-stage return
Broken-link building $150-$400 Slow, reliable, low risk
“Guaranteed DA50+ link” $50-$200 A purchase. Avoid.

Note the pattern: legitimate methods are priced in analyst hours and produce unpredictable volume. Anything priced per guaranteed link is a purchase, and pricing it cheaply is how you can tell.

Contract terms that protect you

  • No paid links, link networks, PBNs, or paid directory submissions
  • All links earned via outreach, digital PR, or editorial placement
  • Monthly report listing every new link: live URL, target page, anchor text, acquisition method
  • Outreach volume committed (e.g. 40 qualified prospects/month) rather than link volume
  • Remediation at provider cost if breaching links are discovered
  • Right to veto placements on brand-safety grounds

Commit outreach volume, never link volume. Outreach is within a provider’s control; links are not, and any guarantee means they are buying.

Auditing what you receive

Each month, take five reported links and check:

  1. Does the URL load and is your link visibly present, not in a hidden footer block?
  2. Is it dofollow or nofollow? Both are legitimate; misreporting is not.
  3. Does the site have real traffic? A high third-party authority score with no organic traffic is a network signal.
  4. Is the surrounding content coherent or a mix of unrelated commercial topics in different languages?
  5. Does the page link out to gambling, pharma, or crypto alongside you? That is a link farm.

Two or three failures in a sample of five means stop the engagement and audit the full profile.

Anchor text discipline

Over-optimised anchors are a classic outsourced-link failure. A natural profile is mostly branded and URL anchors, with exact-match kept low. If your report shows a run of exact-match commercial anchors, that is a manufactured pattern and it is the pattern Penguin was built to detect.

What to keep in-house

Relationships. If your founder knows journalists, podcast hosts, or industry figures, those placements are yours to make and consistently outperform anything an outsourced team can cold-outreach. Outsource the volume work — prospecting, research, first-touch outreach, follow-up — and keep the relationship-led placements.

Frequently asked questions

Should I outsource link building?

Yes, but last and with an explicit contract. It is the only SEO activity where a provider can cause lasting damage, so establish trust on technical and content work first.

How much should a legitimate link cost?

$100-$300 for resource and reclamation outreach, $150-$500 for guest contribution, $300-$1,500 for digital PR. Anything advertised at $50-$200 per guaranteed link is a purchase.

How do I know if my links are safe?

Sample five each month: does the page load with your link visible, does the site have real organic traffic, is surrounding content coherent, and does it link out to gambling, pharma, or crypto? Multiple failures mean stop and audit.

What should the contract commit to?

Outreach volume, not link volume. Outreach is controllable; links are earned. Any guaranteed monthly link count means the provider is buying them.

What anchor text pattern is safe?

Predominantly branded and URL anchors, with exact-match commercial anchors a small minority. A run of exact-match anchors is a manufactured pattern and the primary thing algorithmic link filters look for.
