SEO Location Pages: How to Build Them

SEO location pages are dedicated pages built for each city, suburb, or service area a business serves, designed to rank for searches that include that area name. Done well, they capture location-specific intent a single homepage never can. Done as a template swap, they get filtered out of the index entirely.

What a Location Page Needs

  • A unique headline naming the area, matching how people actually search – “Plumber in [Suburb]” rather than a generic company tagline.
  • Genuine local detail: named streets, landmarks, or neighbourhoods you actually service, not a placeholder paragraph.
  • Local proof – reviews, case studies, or job photos specific to that area where you have them.
  • A clear service list tied to that location, even if the services themselves are the same everywhere.
  • LocalBusiness or Service schema referencing the correct area served.

How Many Location Pages Do You Actually Need

Build a page only where there is real search volume for that area and you can write something genuinely distinct. A location page with no unique content, built purely to exist, is worse than no page at all – it dilutes the site’s overall quality signal and rarely ranks.

Linking Location Pages Correctly

Link every location page from a central hub, such as a “Locations” or “Service Areas” page, and cross-link nearby locations to each other. This keeps the pages within a reasonable crawl depth and signals to Google that they are a coherent set, not orphaned duplicates.

Frequently asked questions

How long should an SEO location page be?

There is no fixed word count. The right length is however much genuine, locally specific content you have – typically 400 to 800 words for a service-area business, more if you have real local case studies to include.

Should location pages target the suburb or the wider city?

Both, at different levels. Build one page for the primary city and separate pages for individual suburbs only where search volume and genuine local detail justify it.

Do location pages need their own backlinks?

Not always, but local links – chambers of commerce, local press, community sponsorships – help location pages rank faster than relying purely on internal linking.
