White Label SEO Content Writing: Cost, Briefs and QA

Content is the largest line item in most SEO retainers and the easiest place for a white label arrangement to become visible. A client who reads a blog post that sounds nothing like their business does not blame the writer – they blame you.

Wholesale and retail

Type Wholesale per 1,500 words Retail Margin
Content mill output $15-$40 Do not resell
Offshore writer, briefed $40-$150 $200-$450 65-75%
Agency-managed, edited $80-$200 $300-$600 60-70%
Subject-matter specialist $250-$600 $700-$1,500 55-60%

Most agencies overspend on informational blog content and underspend on commercial pages. Invert it: the pages that convert deserve the expensive writer, supporting content does not.

The brief carries the quality

A writer who has never spoken to your client’s customers cannot invent their objections. Almost every content complaint traces back to a brief, not a writer. A usable brief contains:

  • Target query and actual intent – what the reader is trying to accomplish
  • The answer, if you know it. Do not make the writer guess at something the client already knows.
  • Three competing pages and specifically what each fails to cover
  • Required section outline
  • Proprietary input – the client’s data, prices, process, customer quotes. This is what makes the piece non-generic and it can only come from the client.
  • The five objections prospects raise before buying
  • Terminology, tone samples, and forbidden claims

Collect the proprietary inputs once at onboarding, in a structured form. Twenty minutes of client time removes months of near-miss content.

Brand voice at arm’s length

The hardest part of white label content is that your client has a voice and the writer has never heard it. Three things that work:

  1. A voice document with examples. Three pieces the client would happily publish, one they would not, and a sentence on why for each. Far more effective than adjectives like “professional but friendly”.
  2. A terminology list. What the client’s market actually calls things, including regional variants and the terms they specifically avoid.
  3. Tight feedback for two months. Mark up the first six pieces properly. Calibration is fast if the feedback is specific and slow if it is “make it sound more like us”.

The AI question

Nearly every provider uses AI somewhere now. The question is not whether, but where in the process and who is accountable for the output.

Acceptable Not acceptable
Research, outlining, first-draft scaffolding Publishing generated text unedited
A named human rewrites and fact-checks No named person accountable
Claims verified against primary sources Statistics invented or unsourced
Volume matched to editorial capacity Volume scaled because generation is free

Ask your provider directly: who edits, what do they verify, and what is the policy on unsourced claims. Then spot-check two statistics per piece. Fabricated citations are the most common failure and the most embarrassing one to have published under a client’s name.

Your QA, in five minutes per piece

  1. Read the opening aloud. If it begins “In today’s competitive digital landscape”, send it back – the whole piece will be generic.
  2. Check two statistics against their cited source.
  3. Ask: does this say anything a competitor’s page does not? If not, the proprietary input was missing.
  4. Scan for terminology the client’s market does not use.
  5. Confirm the commercial intent – does it move the reader anywhere, or just end?

Frequently asked questions

What does white label SEO content cost?

$40-$150 wholesale per 1,500 words from a briefed offshore writer, $80-$200 agency-managed and edited. Resell at $200-$600 for 60-75% margin. Avoid anything under $40.

How do I get content that sounds like my client?

Supply a voice document with three approved examples and one rejected one with reasons, a terminology list, and specific markup on the first six pieces. Adjectives like “professional but friendly” do not calibrate anyone.

Is it acceptable for a provider to use AI?

For research, outlining, and first drafts, yes. Publishing unedited generated text is not. Require a named human editor and a stated policy on unsourced claims.

How do I QA content quickly?

Read the opening aloud, verify two statistics, ask whether it says anything competitors’ pages do not, scan terminology, and check it moves the reader somewhere. Five minutes per piece.

What should I never outsource?

The proprietary inputs – customer objections, original data, pricing logic, and case results. Those are what differentiate the content, and no writer can invent them.
