For CPA and Tax Firms
Nine Times the Demand by March. Plan Ahead With
SEO for Accountants and CPA Firms in the US
In the US, SEO for accountants is timing plus credentials. US searches for “tax preparation near me” went from 27,100 in July 2026 to 246,000 in March 2026, roughly nine times as many, so a firm that is not already ranking by January misses the season. People also search the title: “cpa near me” averages 74,000 searches a month, more than twice “accountant near me” at 33,100. We build listings and service pages around both facts.
For licensed CPA firms, enrolled agents, bookkeeping and payroll practices, and small-business advisory firms that want year-round clients, not only April returns. Practising in Australia? See our SEO for accountants in Australia.
Search Behavior
Why Tax Clients Pick a Firm in Weeks, Not Months
Individuals hire under deadline pressure, usually between January and mid-April. Business owners shop later and slower, and look for proof that a firm understands their industry.
Ranking before the January rush
Use the CPA title properly
Pages for bookkeeping and payroll
Reach owners in the off-season
Reviews that stay confidential
Firms usually gain most from fixing the Google Business Profile in the fall, then adding service pages and a review routine that runs straight after each filing appointment.

Section 7216 and client confidentiality
Under Internal Revenue Code section 7216, a tax return preparer generally may not use or disclose a client's return information without written consent, and the AICPA Code has its own confidential client information rule. For SEO, that means no client names or figures in case studies without consent, and review replies that never confirm the work you did.
The season is short and steep
“Tax services near me” reached 135,000 searches in February 2026, from 14,800 in November 2025. Searches for “cpa near me” held at 135,000 from January to March 2026, then sat at 49,500 from May to July. Firms that publish in March are competing for a wave that is already breaking.
Business clients shop off-season, and cost more
“Small business accountant” peaked at 9,900 in August 2026 and bottomed at 2,900 in November and December 2025, the reverse of the personal tax cycle. Its $46.58 click was the highest here apart from “payroll services” at $232.01, likely pushed up by payroll software companies bidding on the same term.

Four Constraints We Plan Around
Accounting marketing has professional rules that general agencies tend to miss. Each one changes what we publish.
Who may say “CPA”
State boards of accountancy license CPAs and, in most states, CPA firms. Only licensed individuals and properly registered firms may use the title. Because “cpa near me” draws 74,000 searches a month, the temptation to use it loosely is real; we keep it on the pages and listings where it is accurate.
Enrolled agents are a separate credential
Enrolled agents are credentialed by the IRS to represent taxpayers, and “enrolled agent” averages 12,100 searches a month. EA-led practices get pages that explain the credential plainly, rather than borrowing CPA wording they are not entitled to.
Return information stays private
Internal Revenue Code section 7216 restricts tax return preparers from using or disclosing return information without the client's consent. Case studies, testimonials and even review replies must not reveal what a client filed or owed.
Advertising must not mislead
The AICPA Code of Professional Conduct bars false or misleading advertising, and Treasury Circular 230 sets similar limits for anyone practicing before the IRS. We avoid guaranteed-refund language and unverifiable claims on every page.

Frequently Asked Questions
SEO for accountants is the work of getting a CPA, tax or bookkeeping firm found by people searching for those services, mostly in Google’s map results and the organic listings below them. For most firms it means a well-kept Google Business Profile, a page for each service, reviews handled without breaching client confidentiality, and all of it timed to the filing calendar, because demand for tax help peaks between January and April.
By early fall. Map and page changes often take six to ten weeks to settle, and demand climbs fast: “tax preparation near me” rose to 135,000 US searches in January 2026 and 246,000 in March. Starting in September gives time to fix the listing, publish service pages and gather reviews from extension clients filing before the October deadline. Firms that start in February are usually still waiting for results when the season ends.
It should not claim the title. State accountancy laws restrict the CPA designation to licensed individuals and, in most states, to registered firms, and misusing it can bring board action. A non-CPA practice can still rank for “tax preparer” (about 74,000 searches a month) or “enrolled agent” if an EA is on staff. We build pages around the credentials you actually hold, which is also what earns long-term trust from clients.
Publish for them in the months they are looking. “Small business accountant” peaked at 9,900 US searches in August 2026 and “bookkeeping services” at 33,100 in July, both outside tax season. Industry-specific pages, such as accounting for restaurants or contractors, plus a clear monthly bookkeeping or payroll offer, convert better than a generic services list. Reviews from business clients that mention their industry help as well.
Yes. A client may say whatever they like about you; the risk sits in your reply. Section 7216 and the AICPA confidentiality rule mean a response should never confirm what you prepared, what the client owed or which notice you handled. Thank them, keep it general and invite any follow-up by phone. Ask every client in the same way after their engagement, and offer no rewards, since Google's review policy forbids incentives of any kind.
Sometimes, as a bridge. Clicks averaged about $11.12 across the year, and demand peaks with competition, so costs can rise when every firm bids at once. Ads stop the day the budget ends, while a map position keeps producing calls every season. Many firms run modest ads in their first season, then scale them back once organic rankings for tax and CPA searches hold through January.
They can, for local questions, when your details are consistent across the web. Assistants lean on your Google listing, directories, reviews and pages that state plainly which services you offer and which credentials your team holds. Clear service pages and firm schema make you easier to cite. Our generative engine optimization service tracks which AI tools mention your firm for accounting questions in your city.
