December Sells the Portraits. Start With
SEO for Artists Who Sell Originals and Commissions
SEO for artists is the work of making your own website the place a buyer lands after searching for a pet portrait, a mural or an original painting, instead of one marketplace listing among thousands. Serpwize is an SEO agency for painters, illustrators, sculptors and muralists. We build commission pages, image metadata and artwork markup so Google, Google Images and AI assistants can find your work and credit it to you.
Built for independent artists who sell originals, prints or commissions and want a steady source of buyers beyond Etsy and Instagram. Whether you need an SEO consultant for one portfolio site or an SEO company to run the whole program, every recommendation starts from real US search data.
How Americans Find an Artist to Buy From
A buyer rarely starts with an artist’s name. They type what they want, such as “custom pet portrait” (6,600 searches a month in the US) or “original paintings for sale” (2,900), then compare what Google shows. On 30 September 2026, Etsy filled eight of the ten product slots for “custom pet portrait”, yet four independent artists still held organic places in the top ten, with pages that dealt plainly with sizes, prices, timelines or reference photos.

Pages live before gift season
We usually begin with commission pages, because they sit closest to paid work and face the weakest competition. Image work comes next, since a painting that surfaces in Google Images sends the buyer straight to the page it lives on. Identity cleanup runs quietly from week one: your artist name, medium and home city worded the same way on your site, Etsy, Instagram, Pinterest and gallery bios, so an AI assistant treats them as one artist rather than several strangers.
What Your Artist SEO Program Covers
Six areas of work, scaled for one artist or a small studio, with commission pages at the centre and your marketplace shop left running alongside. Artists selling through their own store can add our WooCommerce SEO work, and our guide to alt text for SEO explains how we describe artwork images.

How Americans Search When They Want to Buy or Commission Art
Fourteen buyer queries, averaged across twelve months of US Google data, with the typical price an advertiser paid for one click on each.
| Buyer query | Monthly US searches | Avg. ad click (USD) |
|---|---|---|
| art prints | 27,100 | $1.99 |
| pet portraits | 12,100 | $3.31 |
| art commission | 6,600 | $3.62 |
| custom pet portrait | 6,600 | $2.92 |
| art for sale | 5,400 | $2.36 |
| original paintings for sale | 2,900 | $2.35 |
| local artists near me | 1,900 | $3.69 |
| custom art | 1,900 | $3.52 |
| wedding painter | 1,600 | $1.48 |
| family portrait painting | 1,000 | $3.38 |
| custom portrait painting | 880 | $6.55 |
| mural artist near me | 880 | $4.95 |
| commission a painting | 720 | $5.03 |
| painting from photo | 480 | $5.86 |
What we left out, and why
“Art gallery near me” (74,000) and “art classes near me” (33,100) are far larger, but they come from people visiting a venue or booking a class, not buying from an individual artist. “Abstract art for sale” jumped to 5,400 in August 2026, nearly three times its previous high of 1,900, a spike too sharp to plan around, so it is not listed.
Commission phrases cost the most
The three priciest clicks here all describe commissioned work: “custom portrait painting” at $6.55, “painting from photo” at $5.86 and “commission a painting” at $5.03. Ready-made art is cheaper to advertise, with “original paintings for sale” at $2.35.
“Art commission” barely moves
Unlike the portrait terms, “art commission” held between 5,400 and 6,600 every month of the year. Pet and family portraits swing with the holidays; general commission demand stays flat, so that page earns all year.

How Serpwize Works With Artists
Our team works from India, which suits artists well: pages, image fixes and reports are finished overnight, US time, and calls fit an early East Coast morning or a West Coast evening. Copyright is part of how we handle your images. The US Copyright Office explains that registration is generally needed before an infringement lawsuit, and timely registration keeps statutory damages and attorney’s fees available. The Visual Artists Rights Act of 1990 gives creators of certain paintings, drawings, prints and sculptures rights of attribution and integrity. We write your name and copyright notice into each file; legal questions go to an intellectual property lawyer.

Four Ways Artists Look for Buyers
A marketplace is the quickest start, but Etsy keeps the customer relationship and takes a 6.5% transaction fee on each sale. This is how the routes compare.
| Marketplace shop only | Instagram and social only | Gallery representation | Serpwize artist SEO | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Who finds you | Shoppers searching inside the platform | Followers and whatever the feed promotes | The gallery’s own collectors | Anyone searching Google, Images or AI assistants |
| Cost of each sale | Platform fees on every order | Hours spent posting | Gallery commission on each piece | A set monthly fee, no cut of sales |
| Commission enquiries | Platform messages | Direct messages | Handled by the gallery | Straight to you from your own pages |
| If you stop | Listings stay while fees are paid | Reach drops once posting stops | Depends on the agreement | Rankings fade slowly |
| Who keeps the buyer | The platform | The platform | Often the gallery | You |
Who Shows Up When Buyers Search for Your Kind of Art?
Frequently Asked Questions
It is when people already search for the kind of work you make. Our US data shows about 6,600 monthly searches for “art commission”, 12,100 for “pet portraits” and 1,000 for “family portrait painting”. Artists who take commissions in those areas can win enquiries from strangers without paying per click. If you sell only through a gallery that handles marketing, the case is weaker, and we will tell you that during the audit.
Both can work together. Etsy brings built-in traffic but charges a 6.5% transaction fee per sale and keeps the customer relationship. Your own website builds a lasting asset: pages that rank under your name, direct enquiries and a mailing list you own. The usual approach is to keep the marketplace running while your own site grows, then link the two so each sends buyers to the other.
Give every image a descriptive file name and alt text, place it on a page with real text about the piece, include it in an image sitemap, and keep file sizes small enough to load quickly on a phone. Adding IPTC creator and copyright fields lets Google Images show who made the work, and license details in structured data can add a Licensable badge if you offer licensing.
Only if you meet clients in person. Google limits Business Profiles to businesses with in-person contact, so a muralist, a live event painter or a portrait artist who sees clients by appointment can usually qualify as a service-area business and hide a home address. An artist who sells only online is not eligible, and creating a profile anyway risks suspension.
By September for gift work. In our data, “pet portraits” searches rose to 22,200 in December 2025 and “custom portrait painting” peaked at 1,900 in November 2025. New pages take weeks to be crawled and settle into the results, and buyers ordering a painted gift need to allow for your turnaround time as well, so a page published in December usually arrives too late.
They can, when the web describes you clearly and consistently. Assistants build answers from pages they can read: your website, marketplace profiles, gallery listings, press and reviews. If your name, medium, location and commission options match everywhere, and your own site explains them plainly, an assistant has enough to name you when someone asks for an artist who paints pets or murals near them.
